Even though it was just a tropical storm when it hit Ireland, Ophelia caused at least three deaths and significant damage throughout the island nation. Waves as high as 30 feet pounded parts of the coast, and over 350,000 homes and businesses are without power with the total expected to rise. Schools are closed as are some hospitals and many of the roads in the nation are impassable.
This was the strongest storm to hit Ireland since Hurricane Debbie in 1961. The entire public transportation system is shut down and almost two hundred flights have been cancelled at the country’s two airports. Now Scotland is bracing for a hit.
