Britain Wants To Regulate Tech Companies as News Organizations

Oct 13, 2017

Britain’s Prime Minister Theresa May is considering regulating Facebook and Google in the “same way as news organizations.” The change in regulation would make the companies “responsible for illegal content on their platforms.” Whatever the British government happens to consider illegal such as “terrorist content, pornography, or perhaps one day fake news — these big companies could be fined.” Just last week, it was reported that if people even view “far-right propaganda” online, offenders could face fifteen years in prison. The government did not define what “far-right propaganda” was, so the definition could be forever changing and never really defined. Home Secretary Rudd wants to regulate the way encryption is used. She did not care that she did not understand encryption saying, “I don’t need to understand how encryption works to understand how it’s helping the criminals. I will engage with the security services to find the best way to combat that.” Google, Facebook, Twitter, and other large tech companies are gearing up to confront a wave of regulation that may be coming their way.
