Conservative Legislators in Illinois Fight Governor Over Abortion

Oct 13, 2017

Conservatives in Illinois are seeking to restrict taxpayer funding for abortion. The legislation comes in response to the Republican governor’s recent signing of legislation “that would allow Medicaid and state health-care plans to cover abortions.” Republican Senator Dan McConchie said, “This controversial and culturally divisive act should not be one that taxpayers should be forced to fund.” “Likewise, there is no good reason for taxpayers to be on the hook for someone else’s personal decision.” When the Republican governor signed the legislation, he defended his decision saying, “I believe that a woman living with limited financial means should not be put in the position where she has to choose something different than a woman of higher income would be able to choose.” The response by conservative Republican legislators highlights the sharp divide between their position and that of the governor’s. Governor Rauner is likely to face a strong Republican primary challenge in 2018 when he seeks a second term.
