Oct 5, 2017

Three U.S. army Green Berets have been killed and two others wounded in an ambush in the African country of Niger. The Americans were on a routine training patrol with Niger troops when they were apparently ambushed by an Al Qaeda affiliated terrorist organization. The ambush occurred along the border with Mali where the Al Qaeda units are believe to be based before conducting raids across the border into Niger.

These are the first American casualties resulting in the U.S. mission to provide training and logistical support to the Nigerien armed forces in their fight against the Al Qaeda affiliate.
