Bench Violates Establishment Clause

Oct 2, 2017

A Virginia school district ordered a bible verse inscribed on a bench must be removed for violating the establishment clause. Somehow a bench with a Bible verse inscribed on it constitutes an establishment of state-sponsored religion. The bench memorializes a student who died in 2016 in an ATV accident. The back of the bench is inscribed with Philippians 4:13: “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.” The push to remove the bench comes after state officials thought it violated the Constitution and “were just trying to follow the law.” School Superintendent Nancy Leonard said, “We either have to remove the bench, or we have to cover the scripture or change that verse to something else that may represent the child.” The district is working with the family “to come up with an alternative quote that would replace the Bible verse. The school said it would cover the costs of changing the engraving on the bench.”
