Even before the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico was hit by Hurricanes Irma and Maria it had been suffering under crushing debt for a long time. One of the major problems was the decaying electrical grid on the island. Now the entire island is without power, and major portions of it are also under water. As a result it may be up to six months until much of the power is restored.
Making needed repairs may be an almost insurmountable task with bridges destroyed and many roads impassable. This also poses problems for getting food and water to residents since the public water supply is dependent on a functioning electric grid.
