War on Big Oil

Five oil companies were sued by the city attorneys in San Francisco and Oakland, California on Tuesday. The lawsuit is asking the courts to hold the companies “responsible for climate change, and force them to financially compensate the cities for harm.” British Petroleum, Chevron, Conoco Phillips, Exxon Mobile, and Royal Dutch Shell were named in the suit. “For decades, Defendants have known that their fossil fuels pose risks of ‘severe’ and ‘catastrophic’ impacts on the global climate through the worlds and warnings of their own scientists or through their trade association.” The suit charges the oil companies encouraged “fuel consumption at levels that [were] certain to severely harm the public.” The suit could levy billions of dollars in claims against the companies. One option for the oil companies is to “remove these lawsuits to federal court.” While they likely would not get a favorable ruling in the Ninth Circuit, the appeals would end up in the U.S. Supreme Court.
