Social media companies like Facebook, Google, Twitter and YouTube are facing large fines that will be imposed by members of the European Union unless they can assure these countries that they will remove content posted by terrorists quickly. Nations like Belgium, France, and Germany have increasing concerns about the ability of terrorist groups to use social media platforms to radicalize, recruit, and train terrorists.
These terrorists are then turned lose to attack targets in Europe and have been very successful in some cases. The affected countries want social media to do a better job of identifying terrorist activity and then removing it within two hours. The firms are complaining that this is virtually impossible.
