Senator Graham Calls for Carbon Tax

Sep 20, 2017

Republican Senator Lindsey Graham announced that he was working on legislation to tax carbon dioxide. ā€œIā€™m a Republican. I believe that the greenhouse effect is real, that CO2 emissions generated by man is creating our greenhouse gas effect that traps heat, and the planet is warming.ā€ So far Senator Graham is the only Republican in the Senate to endorse a carbon tax. Senator Graham is working with Democratic Senator Whitehouse on the tax legislation. The proposed tax would raise $2.1 trillion over 10 years. Carbon emissions would be taxed at $49 a ton. Republicans in the House Climate Solutions Caucus have not come out in favor of a carbon tax but might be persuaded to do so. While campaigning, the president opposed a carbon tax. Many conservative groups oppose a tax on carbon because it would increase the size of government and increase the cost of energy.
