Hurricane Maria Reaches Category 5 Strength

Sep 19, 2017

Hurricane Maria has reached category 5 strength with sustained winds of 160 miles per hour and is still heading directly for islands in the Caribbean including the Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico. The governor of Puerto Rico says that there are over 400 shelters open on the island, and is calling for people in vulnerable areas to evacuate.

The American territories of Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands both were hard hit by Hurricane Irma and are just starting to pick up the pieces. Another major hit that could be even worse will be catastrophic for the people and the economies of the islands.
