Hurricane Maria Strengthens

Sep 19, 2017

Hurricane Maria is now a Category 5 storm. The storm was bearing down on Puerto Rico and islands in the Caribbean on Monday. Residents in the Caribbean were encouraged to look for shelter. Puerto Rico has been taking in evacuees from other islands. The White House declared a state of emergency on Puerto Rico and authorized FEMA and DHS to offer relief efforts. Puerto Rico is expected to suffer a direct hit from the storm. “We want to alert the people of Puerto Rico that this is not an event like we’ve ever seen before. It is time to seek refuge with a family member, friend or head to a state shelter,” said Puerto Rican Gov. Ricardo Rosselló. “Flood-prone areas must be abandoned. If not, you will die,” said Public Security Secretary Héctor Pesquera. With winds over 160 miles per hour, the storm could create a storm surge of up to nine feet and bring up to 20 inches of rain to some areas.
