Food Stamp Usage Falls

Sep 19, 2017

Since President Trump took office in January, the use of SNAP benefits has fallen by over one million users to its lowest level since 2010. The biggest drops came in January and March. This is the time frame when states began to reimplement “work requirements to receive food stamps.” There may be other factors in play as well. The president’s budget proposes cuts to the food stamp program and suggests that states “match up to 20 percent of federal money allotted for the food stamp program.” Some members of Congress are working on legislation that would implement work requirements nationwide as well as “time limits on how long food stamp recipients can receive benefits.” As the president’s administration began cracking down on illegal immigration, “Many immigrants, both legal and illegal, canceled their food stamps over fears they might be denied citizenship or deported.”
