According to a survey conducted by the University of Pennsylvania almost 4 0f 10 Americans cannot name any of the five rights protected by the First Amendment to the Constitution. In addition, 48% of the respondents did not know that freedom of speech was one of those rights. The survey also reported that only 26% of respondents could name all three branches of the United States Government and 33% could not even name one branch.
This is unfortunately similar to a survey conducted in the early 1990’s where 25% of college graduates surveyed thought the First Amendment protected their right to own a pet. The bottom line for researchers is that the education of civics in our schools is totally inadequate.
