Navy Looking at Possible cyber-attack as the Cause of Destroyer Collision

Sep 15, 2017

The U.S. Navy is actively investigating whether the collision between the destroyer USS John S, McCain and a merchant vessel was caused by a cyber-attack that hacked into the ship’s computers and navigation system. Ten sailors were killed in the incident and seven others died in a similar incident involving the USS Fitzgerald.

However, the Fitzgerald crash is not under investigation as a hacking incident. If the McCain accident was in fact the result of a cyber-attack it will expose a critical vulnerability in U.S. naval operations that will have be addressed immediately.
