President Want Quick Action on Amnesty

President Trump signaled that if Congress legalizes the 800,000 illegal aliens currently protected by DACA, he will support it. The president agreed to the legislation without pushing for any immigration reforms or funding for a border wall. According to Representative Henry Cuellar, President Trump said “We don’t have to tie a wall to this. We can put a wall [in another bill].” According to Cuellar, the president does not want to wait until DACA expires in March. Waiting until the end would make it more difficult for Congress to act. Instead, the president wants to act “when people are not expecting it.” Rosemary Jenks, a spokeswoman with NumbersUSA, said that “any immigration deal on DACA that includes amnesty would be an ‘outrageous selling out of the [Trump] base.’” The Center for Immigration Studies warned that amnesty would create a “surge in illegal immigration” and “a surge in legal immigration, as newly amnestied DACA recipients would be able to bring their relatives to the U.S.”
