Judge Suspended for Wearing MAGA Hat

A Canadian judge will serve a 30-day unpaid suspension for wearing a “Make America Great Again” hat in his courtroom. Judge Bernd Zabel wore the hat as a joke . . . an attempt to lighten the courtroom’s mood. The far more serious minded judicial council, tasked with meting out justice for the grave infraction, was not amused. “The choice we face is between the second-most serious sanction, suspension without pay for 30 days, perhaps combined with other less serious sanctions, and recommending removal from office,” the panel declared. Before rendering its judgment, the panel made a show of serious deliberation. It waded through piles of automated complaints as well as an almost equal number of messages in support of the judge. “Female colleagues say that he encouraged them when they were at the bar and has been entirely supportive since they joined him on the bench. Fellow judges and members of the bar insist that he is an open-minded and impartial judge who does not exhibit polarized, misogynistic, racist or homophobic views.” The judge’s “unblemished” 27 years of “exemplary service” and support for women and colleagues, likely persuaded the judicial panel to restrain member’s inclination to fire Judge Zabel. Opting instead for the more modest 30-day unpaid suspension.
