The United Nations Security Council has voted unanimously to impose new sanctions on North Korea but they are not nearly as strong as those proposed by President Trump and Nikki Haley, the U.S. ambassador to the United Nations. Unfortunately, concessions had to be made to keep the Russians and Chinese on board since either country could have vetoed the resolution,
For example, a cap has been put on the amount of oil imports by the North Koreans and that falls short of the total embargo the U.S. wanted. The watered down version also does not impose the sanctions on the North Korean airlines and the military that the U.S. wanted. However, Nikki Haley says these are still the strongest sanctions imposed yet.
