Equifax, Inc. is one of the largest credit reporting agencies in the world and has acknowledged that up to 143 million customers in the United States have had their information stolen in a massive cyber-attack. This includes names, addresses, birth dates, social security numbers, and driver’s license numbers. The company reports the breach occurred between mid-May and the end of July.
The company has apologized and has offered free identity theft protection and credit file monitoring to its customers, but much of the damage has probably already been done. The stock in the company is crashing and many people are wondering about the security of their data with other credit reporting companies.
