Florida Sheriff Warns Criminals to Avoid Shelters

Sep 8, 2017

The outspoken and sometimes controversial Sheriff of Polk County, Florida has issue a stern warning to people seeking shelter from Hurricane Irma. Everyone’s IDs will be checked and if someone is found to have a warrant out for their arrest they will escorted by deputies from the shelter to the county jail.

The sheriff is particularly concerned about keeping sexual predators out of the shelters to protect children who might be in a vulnerable position. In some ways this is a unique and revolutionary action since most of the time there is more concern with just sheltering people from the storm than also protecting them from being prey for criminals.
