Democrats Administer Religious Test To Nominee

Sep 7, 2017

Democrat Senators Durbin and Feinstein probed Amy Coney Barrett about her Catholic faith. Barrett is a nominee for a federal appellate court vacancy. Article VI of the Constitution says, “No religious Test shall ever be required as a Qualification to any Officer or public Trust under the United States.” Undeterred, Senator Durbin asked Barrett, “Do you consider yourself an orthodox Catholic?” Senator Feinstein lectured Barrett on her Catholicism saying, “The dogma lives loudly within you, and that’s of concern.” The Senate Judiciary Committee has received 73 letters of endorsement on behalf of Barrett from law professors from across the country. The endorsements rated her “first-rate.” Barrett assured the committee that as an appellate judge, she would be bound to follow Supreme Court precedent. Currently there 162 judicial vacancies pending. The president has nominated 32 individuals so far.
