President Strikes Deal With Democrats

Sep 7, 2017

President Trump struck a deal with Democratic leaders to raise the debt ceiling, provide Hurricane Harvey relief, and keep the government funded until some point in December. As the president was leaving for North Dakota, he specifically named Nancy Pelosi and Chuck Schumer saying, “We agreed to a three-month extension on debt ceiling, which they consider to be sacred — very important — always we’ll agree on debt ceiling automatically because of the importance of it.” Although he is phasing out former President Obama’s DACA, President Trump suggest that if Congress passed legislation resolving the issue, he might sign it. By siding with Democrats to resolve the immediate budget crisis, the president showed Republicans that he will try to get things done without them. Republicans have been unable or unwilling to deliver on the Trump agenda. They talked about repealing Obamacare for seven years but when they had the opportunity to do it, they walked away from it.
