How to Punish North Korea

Sep 5, 2017

The South Korean government is calling on the United States to help “punish” North Korea for its test of a hydrogen bomb. South Korea is looking for ways to increase the country’s offensive missile capabilities as well as installing additional missile defense batteries “both of which signal a more militaristic approach to dealing with Pyongyang.” The Minister of National Defense, Song Young Moo, is asking the United States to deploy “aircraft carriers and nuclear powered submarines to help punish the North. While the placement of Naval ships in the region could “signal U.S. resolve and show incredible force,” the U.S. deployed two aircraft carriers and two submarines in April yet North Korea did not back down. By escalating the military presence in the region, the risks of miscalculation increases.
