Snowflake Meltdown At Ole Miss

Sep 1, 2017

The world nearly came to a standstill for the students at the University of Mississippi “after a discarded banana peel was found hanging in a tree on campus.” A highly insensitive student confessed to discarding “the banana peel by throwing it into the tree when he couldn’t find a garbage can.” Rather than disregarding the banana peel as a piece of garbage, Makala McNeil, president of a black sorority, became “just sort of paranoid for a second” upon seeing the banana peel. “The overall tone was heavy. I mean, we were talking about race in Mississippi and in the Greek community so there’s a lot involved,” McNeil said. As word spread about the banana peel, students became agitated, others left the retreat in tears, and some no longer felt safe nor welcome. Ryan Swanson, the student who threw the banana peel, apologized for his insensitivity and thoughtlessness. “Although unintentional, there is no excuse for the pain that was caused to members of our community. I have much to learn and look forward to doing such and encourage all members of our community to do the same." The University of Mississippi plans an investigation and campus discussion of the incident. It might be cheaper and faster to just add more garbage cans around campus.
