North Korea Preparing to Test Nuclear Weapon

Sep 1, 2017

North Korea appears to be preparing an underground nuclear testing facility. American intelligence agencies believe that increased activity could “signal preparations for a sixth underground test blast.” Satellite “images of technicians and vehicle activities” indicate increased activity around North Korea’s test site. The test could happen on September 9 in celebration of the anniversary of North Korea’s founding. North Korea conducted two nuclear tests in 2016. The North Koreans were believed to be preparing to test a nuclear weapon in April, but the Chinese government pressured North Korea to hold back. The Trump administration has made private appeals to the Chinese to intervene with the North Koreans to stop current plans for testing. The United States recently imposed new economic sanctions on “10 companies and six people, including Chinese and Russians, for illicit trade in nuclear and missile goods to North Korea.
