FEC Complies With FOIA Request by Liberal Group in Record Time

Aug 31, 2017

The Federal Election Commission complied with a Freedom of Information Act request by the liberal Mother Jones news outlet. Reporter Andy Kroll asked for “all emails Don McGahn sent between July 2008 through September 2013 while he was an FEC commissioner.” The FEC complied in four months. It provided Mother Jones with 4,400 emails. Yet the 17 FOIA requests filed more than three years ago by many conservative groups are still languishing. The longest outstanding FOIA request was filed by the National Republican Lawyers Association six years ago. It seeks information relating to Democratic FEC commissioners and outside groups. The FEC has been sued “three times in two years for failure to comply with FOIA requests.” Rudy Takala of TheHill.com said, “A reasonable person could certainly be led to believe that the agency is responding to FOIA requests selectively.
