Senator Robert Melendez will go on trial next week. He’s charged with bribery and corruption. The Department of Justice alleges that Dr. Salomon Melgen “began a pattern of treating Menendez to weekend and weeklong getaways in the Dominican Republic that would continue for the next several years.” Melgen and family members gave hundreds of thousands of dollars to the re-election efforts of Menendez. Prosecutors charge that Menendez took official actions in office that benefited the doctor. In a DOJ filing, prosecutors say, “Although Menendez did not pay Melgen back for the lavish gifts in money, he did pay him back using the currency of his Senate office to take official action to benefit the South Florida doctor.” Dr. Melgen was found guilty of defrauding millions from Medicare. The doctor still faces sentencing.
