The New York Times newspaper is celebrating the fact that a judge has dismissed the defamation lawsuit filed by former Alaska governor and Vice Presidential candidate. She sued the Times several months ago after it published an editorial containing an assertion that an ad run by Palin had resulted in the 2011 shooting of Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords. This story had been quickly discredited at the time yet the newspaper ran it again as if it had been factual.
It is very difficult for public figures to win defamation suits against the media, yet what probably save the New York Times in this case was the fact that it printed a retraction the day after it published the story for the second time.
