The State of Texas has already activated all 12,000 members of its National Guard to assist in disaster relief following Hurricane Harvey. Now the Pentagon says it is preparing to activate up to 30,000 more guard members from around the country to assist, and may deploy a U.S, Navy amphibious assault ship as well as 24 more helicopters in addition to the 30 already deployed. It is possible that up to 100 helicopters will be deployed if needed.
In addition, the 14 looters already arrested in Houston may find that they face life sentences under a new Texas law providing for enhanced penalties for people who commit such crimes during natural disasters.
