Late yesterday afternoon residents of La Porte, Texas, and two other communities about 20 miles south of Houston were ordered to stay in their homes and shelter in place. This was due to a release of dangerous hydrogen chloride from a chemical plant apparently affected by the flooding in the area. Sheltering in place means shutting off the air-conditioning units and keeping all doors and windows shut.
The chemical can cause serious injury and even death if inhaled. Fortunately, the release was quickly contained and there were no reported injuries before the all clear was given. However, this is another indication of the dangers facing Texas residents for the foreseeable future.
