Leftists Want to Ban Conservative Speakers in Berkeley

Berkeley, California’s Mayor Jesse Arreguin, wants UC Berkeley to cancel events for Free Speech Week in September. During Free Speech Week, a campus conservative group, Berkeley Patriot will be hosting several speakers opposed to the Left. Mayor Arreguin said, “I don’t want Berkeley being used as a punching bag. I am concerned about these groups using large protests to create mayhem. It’s something we have seen in Oakland and in Berkeley.” Arreguin wants the university to force Berkeley to rescind invitations to Milo Yiannopoulos, Ann Coulter, and Steve Bannon. He said, “I obviously believe in freedom of speech, but there is a line between freedom of speech and then posing a risk to public safety. University spokesman Dan Mogulof said that the university does not have the legal right to “interfere with or cancel invitations based on the perspectives and beliefs of the speakers.” He pledged to make it a priority to keep the community safe as well as the snowflakes “who may feel threatened or harmed by what some of these speakers may espouse.”
