Mexico Offers Aid To Texas

Aug 29, 2017

Mexico offered to help Texas in the aftermath of Hurricane Harvey. The head of Mexico’s Foreign Relations Ministry tweeted, “I just spoke to Gov. @GregAbbott_TX. We will provide all the help we can. Our full solidarity with the people of Texas.” In 2005, the Mexican government sent emergency supplies to Louisiana after Hurricane Katrina. While the United States and Mexico are at odds over the border wall and NAFTA, the offer appears to be a conciliatory gesture by the Mexican government. On Saturday, President Trump harshly criticized the NAFTA renegotiation calling both Canada and Mexico “being very difficult.” If President Trump interjected himself and accepted Mexico’s offer of help, he could claim the value of the aid as part of Mexico’s contribution to the border wall.
