Minimum Wage Hike Would Kill Jobs

A $15 an hour minimum wage would devastate a Maryland county. An estimated 47,000 jobs would be lost over the next five years. The study found that residents in the county would lose $396.5 million in income loss. Businesses would lay off workers, cut hours and benefits, and stop opening new locations. Montgomery County Executive Isiah Legget said, “We can’t minimize some of the impacts outlined here. Even if it’s not 47,000 jobs lost, even if it’s half that, those are some startling numbers. You can’t discount it all.” Another council member called the study “nonsense.” Marc Elrich did not think it possible to predict how increasing the minimum wage would impact businesses and jobs. Elrich discounted the study because he thought businesses would respond negatively.
