Democrats Might Overplay Their Hand

Aug 10, 2017

Bernie Sanders is making single payer health care a litmus test for Democrat incumbents. Several high profile Democrat senators have given their support to Sanders’ single payer legislation. A majority of House Democrats have signed on to Rep. John Conyers’ single-payer bill. But Democrats are worried that Sanders’ supporters will launch primary challenges to Democratic moderates in 2018. By supporting challengers, Bernie Sanders might quash the plans of Democrats who hope to retake the House and the Senate in 2018. Former Ohio state Senator Nina Turner and Bernie Sanders supporter said, “We’re not going to accept no more hemming and hawing. No more game playing. Make your stand.” But one Democratic aide said, “You can’t just be a liberal Democrat in a lot of these states and be elected. The question is how we improve the lives of people instead of playing these political games." The Sanders’ wing of the Democratic party has the most enthusiastic activists.
