Banks Must Give Loans to Dreamers

A U.S. District Court in California refused to dismiss a lawsuit against Wells Fargo. The bank is accused of violating federal law because it denied loans to illegal immigrants who came to the U.S. as children. Judge Chesney, a Clinton appointee, refused to dismiss the lawsuit. She “argued that the bank violated California civil rights law as well as federal laws prohibiting the denial of loans based on citizenship status.” Wells Fargo attorneys argued that they did not violate the Equal Credit Opportunity Act because the act says nothing about citizenship. Judge Chesney said that California law requires businesses “to grant equal contract rights to all persons” even if the persons are in the country illegally.
