Under a long standing law, the Justice Department would allow corporate defendants to pay money to non-governmental organizations to avoid further prosecution. The practice widely abused by the Obama Administration. Corporate defendants could pay money to left-wing groups and avoid further investigation and prosecution. Attorney General Sessions put an end to the practice in June in a department-wide memo that listed three narrow exceptions. After ordering an end to the practice, Sessions ordered the DOJ to report on all payments made by corporate defendants to non-governmental organizations. The DOJ has until the end of August to report all payments. Payments that have been agreed to but not paid are to be identified.
