Managing the War in Afghanistan

The White House is floating the idea of replacing General Nicholson who is currently head of American forces in Afghanistan. The open slot would allow the president to fill it with National Security Advisor McMaster and move CIA Director Mike Pompeo to head the National Security Council. McMaster has been trying to increase the number of troops in Afghanistan and commit to another four years. But so far he has not sold the president on his idea. Senators Lindsey Graham and Bob Corker are not so sure of these staffing moves. Graham would support McMaster heading American forces in Afghanistan if the rules of engagement are changed to allow greater flexibility in fighting the Taliban. He also wants troop levels raised. The on and off commitment to Afghanistan encourages the Taliban to play both sides according to Senator Corker. He said that under President Obama, “The policies we had in Afghanistan were ludicrous.”
